In Tanzania

Public programmes, with their official sites.

  • Ajira Portal – public-service jobs

The Ajira Portal is the official public-service recruitment portal, run by the Public Service Recruitment Secretariat. You create an account, complete your profile and apply for the posts advertised. Apply only through the portal and be wary of anyone asking for money for a job.

    Official site: portal.ajira.go.tzChecked 6 November 2026

  • Student loans and scholarships (HESLB)

The Higher Education Students’ Loans Board (HESLB) gives loans and grants to eligible, needy Tanzanian students, with guidelines for each level (diploma, bachelor’s and others). According to the site, the 2026/2027 loan window is closed, so watch for the next one and for announced scholarships. Applications go only through HESLB’s official system.

  • Vocational training (VETA)

The Vocational Education and Training Authority (VETA) offers short and long courses at its colleges, dual apprenticeships, and recognition of prior learning (RPL) for artisans who learned on the job. Course and fee lists can be downloaded from the site. Check that a centre is recognised by VETA before paying for training.

Remote work

Work from Tanzania for clients and companies abroad.

  • Online freelance work for international clients

The World Bank report ‘Working Without Borders’ looks at online gig work, for which demand is rising in developing countries: the opportunities, and also risks such as weak social protection, low pay and data security. It is a good read before you join a platform. Never pay to ‘unlock’ a job, and protect your personal data.

  • Online work through digital platforms

Digital platforms let you work remotely for clients and employers abroad, but the ILO also points to decent-work gaps in this sector. Its portal covers the Decent Work in the Platform Economy Convention (No. 193), adopted in June 2026, and resources on workers’ rights. A real employer won’t ask you to pay to get work, so beware of ‘tasks’ that require a deposit.
